Shays's Rebellion
In the midst of economic crisis, Shays's Rebellion greatly impacted public opinion, mainly on the opinion of the public regarding debts and taxation.
Massachusetts legislature had been determinded to pay off the state debt, and to pay off the mounted taxes, the burden was mostly falling on people of moderate income, like farmers. Farms were being foreclosed because the farmers weren't able to pay the taxes, but that was due to the fact that their moderate income didn't allow for them to pay the taxes. Under the leadership of Daniel Shays, who was a veteran of Bunker Hill, Ticonderoga, and Saratoga, him and the rebels marched to Springfield and prevented the state supreme court from meeting. As this occurred, the state government sent troops against them and the rebels attacked the Springfield arsenal. Daniel Shays fled to Vermont and Shays's uprising was regared by many as only "a little rebellion", and considered necessary for the health of government. The rebellion illustrated the clash between local and national interests.
The rebellion was important to the impact of public opinion because it got many people thinking of the power of state and national governments.
